Is there anything better than perfected summer skin? I think not! I’ve listed my top four foundations perfect for summer nights and days. Glow on people. Glow on.
Just to be clear, the foundations I have chosen to include are all naturally light-weight and bordering on light to medium coverage. For me, it’s important that the texture of skin remains visible in summer i.e. freckles are on show and summer tans remain noticeable. Some of the foundations are buildable however, I wouldn’t class them as heavy duty on coverage, they’re mostly reflective and typically offer the ‘summer glow’ that makeup artists talks about.

Light Wonder Foundation, Charlotte Tilbury
- Light-weight foundation
- Suited to people with ‘good’ blemish-free skin
- Best for a natural base
I’ll start with the most light-weight foundation of the four – this foundation is great for dry to normal-combination skin types and despite it being very light-weight it does a pretty good job of reducing pores and smoothing complexions. It’s buildable in the sense that you can mask discolouration and pigmentation, however, you will need a concealer to disguise blemishes. This foundation is extremely hydrating and instantly brightens the skin, however, I do advise you have a light powder nearby if you tend to get oily throughout the day. To be totally honest, I would recommend this foundation to someone who has ‘good’, blemish-free skin. I’m currently using this foundation as it works well with my dry skin however, this wouldn’t have been the best match for me a few months ago when I had angry, raised blemishes.
*This foundation does not contain SPF so it’s important that you apply sun protection before the foundation. I really like La Roche Posse SPFa50 – it’s completely lightweight and non-sticky/greasy. I’ve tried it under multiple foundations and it doesn’t react badly or cause oxidisation.
Traceless Foundation, Tom Ford
- Light-weight foundation
- Best suited to people with dry skin to normal-combination skin
Much like Light Wonder, the Traceless Foundation is also incredibly light-weight and sheer on the skin. It’s described as a 3-in-1 foundation that delivers a balanced complexion that glows with vitality and radiance. It applies seamlessly on the skin and is near enough undetectable (if you get the right shade!) It’s fairly buildable, however, I would suggest opting for a concealer to cover blemishes. This is my ‘go to’ foundation for when my skin is feeling a tired or needs an extra boost – it instantly adds vibrancy to dull skin and is extremely comfortable to wear. I think I’m on my third bottle of this!
*Contains SPF 15
Sheer Glow Foundation, NARS
- Best for brightening
- Medium coverage
Lightweight, buildable and natural! For those wanting a little more coverage without being too cakey, Sheer Glow might be the perfect match for you. I suppose the secret is in the name; this foundation expertly evens skin tone offering you a softer, smoother, more luminous canvas to work with. Despite its light-weight formula it definitely offers more coverage than the first two foundations mentioned. I would opt to wear sheer glow for summer nights as it offers a buildable coverage perfect for “out-out” evening makeup. I often add a touch of liquid or cream highlighter into the formula to add extra luminosity.
*Does not contain SPF
Luminous Silk Foundation, Giorgio Armani
- Lightweight and buildable
- Light-medium coverage
- Blendable and streak-free
- Great colour range
There’s a reason why this foundation has been awarded “Best Liquid Foundation” for the 13 years in a row – I really don’t have a bad word to say about it. If I had to choose a foundation of choice for any occasion it would be this one. It offers the best of both worlds where its lightweight and comfortable to wear yet it’s still buildable and covers imperfections without looking heavy and cakey. The foundation glides on seamlessly and blurs imperfections – a little definitely goes a long way. I don’t know the complexity of the science behind the formula but I can confirm that wearing the Luminous Silk Foundation is like having your very own secret filter – skin literally feels ‘lit-from-within’. I would recommend applying this foundation (and all of the others) with a brush rather than a sponge – beauty blenders and other sponges drink up these foundations like it’s water!
Just as a little addition, I thought I’d include three liquid highlighters that I’m enjoying at the moment. Liquid highlighters can be great for adding an extra dimension to your base when used correctly. I usually try to stick to one simple rule – don’t overdo it!
Custom Enhancer Drops, Cover FX
Hollywood Flawless Filter, Charlotte Tilbury
Girl Meets Pearl, Benefit
I’ve really enjoyed using these highlighters and experimenting with their versatility as primers, complexion and radiance boosters and mega-watt highlighters. Girl Meets Pearl can be worn alone or as a soft pink tone primer. Its light-reflecting pigments give the skin a healthy dewy finish – very natural and not overpowering. If you’re looking for a bolder and more noticeable option for highlighter then the Custom Enhancer Drops will be perfect for you – add one or two drops into your foundation formula for noticeable glowing complexion or add a tiny amount to the areas you’d like to highlight. It’s worth noting that the pigmentation in these drops are insane and a little goes a long way. Now for my favourite of them all, the Hollywood Flawless Filter from Charlotte Tilbury – It’s definitely the most versatile of them as it can be used as a primer, complexion enhancer and the perfect highlighter. The formula not only illuminates but also burrs so that imperfections and lines are masked, skin appears smoother and pored reduced. I knew Charlotte Tilbury made killer products, but this one is definitely something else – I’ve used it every day since purchasing and am considering getting another in paranoia that something happens to my current one!
