Beauty Works Luxury Hair Extensions: Making Dream Hair A Reality

Beauty Works Luxury Hair Extensions: Making Dream Hair A Reality

Hair extensions tend to get a bad rap, especially when clips and rings are sneakily visible, however, when done properly they can transform someone’s appearance not to mention their confidence – let’s be honest, has anyone ever left the house unhappy on a good hair day? I think not.

If you’re looking to learn more about hair extension then look no further. I provide a basic guide to various types of hair extensions and share my experience of using Beauty Works Luxury Hair Extensions.

It’s needless to say that I’m pro hair extensions. I’ve been wearing various types for many years and I would never consider attending a social event without them for fear of feeling completely bare and under(hair)dressed. For me, hair extensions offer an instant confidence boost – supporting voluminous, polished hair automatically means less effort in all other areas i.e. ripped cut-off shorts and an old tee is completely acceptable when supporting Negin Mirsalehi-esque hair. If you haven’t heard of her then look her up – she’s ultimate hair goals!

I have the most experience of wearing clip in extensions – they’ve been my go-to method for the last ten years however I’ve recently branched into trying both micro-rings and the sew in weft method otherwise known as the ‘LA weave’. I’ll list my experiences below as well as some basic information on the different methods; general pros and cons and the types of hair they’re best suited to.

Hair Extensions 101

Before diving into different types of application methods it’s important to know that you have two choices when it comes to hair; human hair and synthetic hair. For me, there’s no question – I have always opted for human hair because it blends better with your own, looks natural and lasts longer. Remy hair is considered to be the finest quality of human hair as the cuticles are kept intact i.e. not stripped – I’ve had used both Remy and non-Remy hair in the past and I definitely prefer the Remy extensions because they’re softer, easier to style, and extremely blendable. From my research synthetic hair is made of various synthetic, blended fibres, and contains no human hair. These fibres are usually very fine, plastic fibres that are manufactured to imitate real hair.

Clip-in Hair Extensions
  • Cost-effective
  • Perfect for first-timers
  • Great for experimenting with styles and adding colour dimension

Clip-in extensions are perfect for hair extension virgins. If you’re looking to experiment with volume and length for the first time, this is a great option for you. Often you’ll hear people complain about the maintenance of permanent extensions i.e. longer washing and styling time, aftercare, investing in specialist shampoos etc so, clip-ins is the perfect introduction to hair extensions without the annoyances of permanent ones. You’ll also get to know what extra volume and length feels like – some people love it, while others find it overbearing. I personally only wore clip-ins at weekends and for social occasions so one pack would normally last up to one year if I kept them in good condition.

Tape-In Hair Extensions
  • Best type for thin hair
  • Great for volume and length
  • Can be re-used if maintained

This type of extension is sandwiched between two pieces of bioadhesive tape that’s secured by a heated tool and can last for up to six to eight weeks. Moisture can have a negative effect on tape extensions so it’s best to avoid heavy conditioners or oily products – hot yoga buffs and regular gym go-ers may want to stay clear of tape-ins. If you have thin hair, a few cleverly placed tape ins might be the best option for you.

Sew-In Hair Extensions – Weaves / Wefts
  • Best for thick hair types
  • Great for length and volume
  • Can be re-used if maintained

To my knowledge, there are two different types of weaves/wefts – one that requires sewing into a braid and the other that requires sewing to natural hair secured by micro-rings aka – “LA Weave”.

People who have extremely thick coarse hair will be able to withstand the braiding method whilst generally thick hair types can benefit from the LA weave – weaves/wefts should only be fitted to thicker hair as the general process puts a lot of strain on the scalp and can feel quite heavy on the head.

The “LA Weave” is the most current type of application and is already a favourite amongst mega hair stylists. It provides a  naturally thick ‘blanket’ effect which resembles the fall of natural hair. I can say from experience that your scalp can feel tight and sore for up 48 hours after application but it’s every bit worth it as it’s the most permanent and most seamless method out there. I would consider this the healthiest method as it requires no heat or glue and can stay in your hair for up to 6-8 weeks before needing a re-fit.

Fusion & Pre-Bonded Hair Extensions
  • The most discreet method
  • Most traditional/popular method of application
  • Ideal for regular gym buffs

Fusion hair extensions, otherwise known as bonded, or pre-bonded is perhaps the most popular method of hair extension attachment, mostly because it’s the oldest and most traditional form of applying hair extensions. Bonds of natural hair are attached to the person’s hair by using glue and should only be removed by using a specialist dissolvent. Like most of the other permanent methods, the bonds will need repositioning every 2-3 months as the natural hair grows. If you already have damaged hair or your hair is prone to breakage then this method may not be for you as the process itself can be damaging to natural hair i.e. causes hair loss and scalp irritation.

Micro-Link Hair Extensions
  • Best for thick hair types
  • Great for length and volume
  • Can be re-used if maintained

Micro-link extensions seem to be getting a lot more popular these days. This method requires looping the extension through a small section of the natural hair and securing by clamping a metal ring or bead. Much like the fusion bonds this method can be quite damaging as the metal ring can cause the natural hair to break. On average the application time can be between 1.5-3 hours and will need re-fitting every 8-10 weeks. On-going maintenance i.e. daily brushing is extremely important when sporting micro rings as hair can matte if not maintained properly.

What to consider before getting hair extensions
  • Hair Extensions are costly | The initial purchase of the hair is the ‘biggie’ but you must remember that the application and aftercare i.e. re-fitting also costs! So if you’re looking to experiment with your hair on a budget I strongly suggest trialling temporary clip ins first.
  • Aftercare is very important | Don’t skip or pro-long your aftercare to save cash as you’ll end up causing more damage to your natural hair. Ensure that you re-position your hair extensions every 8-10 weeks.
  • Give your hair a break | The thought of natural, extension-free hair can be a scary thought for the avid hair extension user but it’s vital to let your natural hair breath for a few months in-between re-fittings.
  • Daily maintenance is important | You must remember to brush in sections every day to avoid hair matting. Once hair is matted, it’s incredibly difficult to de-tangle without removing the hair extensions.
  • Double washing and styling time | Wash days become an absolute chore as the drying and styling time can be very time-consuming. Washing and styling my natural hair would usually take me 30 mins, now it takes me at least 1.5 hours to wash, blow-dry and style my hair with extensions. Tip: invest in a dry shampoo for the weekdays!
  • Consider the texture and style of your natural hair | If you have poker straight hair then you’re lucky as your styling time will be considerably less than those with curly, frizzy or wavy hair. For those sporting a wilder mane, your air-drying days will have to come to an end. Generally, hair extensions are either poker straight or incredibly curly so anything in-between will require lots of styling and maintenance.
  • Go long or short | Don’t think that ‘long’ is your only option. Hair extensions are a great way to add subtle volume to shorter lengths. You can also be strategic on where you place them e.g. if you require some extra help around the sides why not add a few bonds or one or two tapes to even out length and volume.
Beauty Works Luxury Hair Extensions: My Experience

I’ve recently been introduced to Beauty Works and have been assured by avid hair extension users that they’re the best in the business. Beauty Works is currently the UK’s leading brand in luxury hair extensions and it’s easy to see why – the quality of the hair is out of this world! The hair is hand-selected, 100% Remy cuticle retained human hair which explains the high gloss shine and it somehow retains volume whilst still feeling fairly light-weight. Beauty Works offers a vast range of hair extension application methods as well as an extensive easy-blend colour range.

BeautyworksPrior to my hair fitting, I went to the Beautyspot Salon located at Fairmont, The Palm Dubai to have a consultation with Katrina, the Beauty Works Hair Specialist. During the consultation, we discussed which methods would best suit my hair and lifestyle as well as options for colour blends and lengths. Katrina was very helpful, insightful and very honest – something that I respect in a hair expert. She only recommended application methods that would preserve my natural hair and cause minimal damage which I appreciated.

We both agreed that the 20inch sew in weft method (equal to 180g), otherwise known as the L.A. Weave would work best for me as I have naturally thick hair. I also choose to stay true to my root colour and opted shade 1b to mask my damaged bleached ends.

Before Beauty WorksBefore

The fitting process from start to finish took approximately 4hrs which included cutting and colouring my natural hair and later fitting and styling the hair extensions. My colour was done by a talented colourist and stylist at the Beautyspot salon and Katrina very kindly fitted and styled my hair extensions.

I’m extremely happy with the results and would definitely recommend Beauty Works Luxury Hair Extensions!
